Shanghai Historical Buildings Part 2

Formerly a Russian Bank, currently used as the Chinese Foreign Exchange and Trade Center.


Headquarter of the Shanghai Labor Union, formerly Jiaotong Bank.


Union Insurance Co., Currently the Shanghai Architectural Design Institute.



The main Post Office for the foreign settlement. On Soochow Creek across the former British American Tobacco Co. It is now Shanghai's main Post Office.


Custom House.


The Peace Hotel, formerly the Sassoon House, designed by Palmer and Turner Architects. Construction began in 1926 and completed in 1929.


Formerly the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank headquarters.


The Gutzlaff Signal Tower, built in 1884, served as a control tower for river traffic during colonial days. It was rebuilt in 1907, and also relayed weather reports. In 1993 during the widening of Zhongshan Lu, it was moved 20m (65 ft.) to its current site. The ground floor housed the Bund Museum and a bar opened on the second floor in 2007.


The Embankment House, built in 1932 by the Sassoons. Once the largest apartment house in Shanghai.

Xujiahui Cathedral, formerly St. Ignatius Cathedral.


Mu'en (Baptised with Mercy) Church, Xizang Zhonglu. Formerly a Methodist Church.


The Russian Orthodox Mission Church, built in 1931 in the French Concession where most of the Russian refugees had settled.
It is now a securities exchange firm and also house a disco on the second floor under the dome-the "St. Peter's Club."


St. Nicholas, The Russian Orthodox Military Church, on the former rue Comeille. It is now a resturant and casino.
